Highlight on the Brooklyn Children’s Museum expansion.
 Construction is scheduled to begin this year on the expansion of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects. The undulating, L-shaped, two-story, daffodil-yellow building will add just about double the museum’s size to 102,000 square feet. The project is slated to be certified as the nation’s first “green” children’s museum by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The new building will combine the latest innovations in sustainable architecture such as a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar energy, a number of sensor systems, and renewable and recycled materials, and interactive exhibits and signage that highlight the building’s high performance features.
The new building will wrap around the existing 1977 structure (most of which is below ground) designed by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer and the original Interactive Learning Environment designed by Edwin Schlossberg. Completion is scheduled for 2006, and the museum will make every effort to keep the facility open throughout the construction period.

Downtown Brooklyn - Approved development plan to facilitate the continued growth of Downtown Brooklyn.
From the Department of City Planning and the NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC)
The plan recommends a series of zoning map and zoning text changes, new public open spaces, pedestrian and transit improvements, urban renewal, street mappings and other actions that would foster a multi-use urban environment to serve the residents, businesses, academic institutions and cultural institutions of Downtown Brooklyn and its surrounding communities. Building on the success of previous development efforts that have retained and attracted companies in New York, the plan would create new retail and housing, and would foster expanded academic and cultural facilities.
Downtown Brooklyn is the citys third largest central business district after Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. Because of its close proximity to lower Manhattan and excellent local and regional mass transit access, Downtown Brooklyn occupies a valuable and unique position in New York City as a competitive, back-office alternative to New Jersey. Generally bounded by Tillary Street to the north, Ashland Place to the east, Atlantic Center and Schermerhorn Street to the south, and Court Street to the west, it is a diverse area with a high concentration of major office buildings, regional stores, residential buildings, government offices and a number of major academic and cultural institutions.
